I have a 14" thinkpad t61 and will have a x200s, both running on XP; the latter is of course a new model with higher performance. However most of the time I'll be using the t61 (as desktop). The x200s I use only to carry out. I'll have a total of 7GB memory: 2GBx3 + 1GB (including the ones installed). Which machine should get 4GB and which gets 3GB?

Probably doesn't matter. Difference between 3 and 4gb is minimal, especially with a 32 bit OS. I'd go and put 4 in the t61 since its your desktop and I'm assuming you might run slightly more intensive stuff.

In my experience I went from 3gb down to 2gb on my t61 and I don't notice the difference, but I don't really do anything to intense with this guy anymore.

As the previous poster said, considering the fact that you're running XP, the point is moot. I'm afraid 3 GiB is already beyond the logical limit of what XP can address.

XP can address just as much memory as any other 32bit OS; it's something around 3.5GB effectively. XP 64 can, of course, support more, but I doubt you are using it. Nonetheless, as the other posts have mentioned, you probably won't notice any difference between 3GB and 4GB on an XP system, though I'd still put more memory in the machine that you use more often, in this case, the T61.
