I just bought the Compaq V2000Z and i was looking at upgrading the ram to a gig.
I've been lurkin around the forums and ive seen Crucial, Corsair or Kingston is preferred. Kingston has been good too my desktop so i found this..
Kingston 1024 MB DDR2
I never thought the Ati Raedon Express 200 could take DDR2 but it says its 200 PIN, will it fit?
Also i couldnt find out if my board supports dual channel..

Nope DDR2 wont work. The laptop only supports only DDR memory. Dual channel is also not supported, only socket 939 processors support dual channel memory.

Can i mix my 256mb PC2700 with 512mb PC3200?
-
Yes, higher speed RAM(PC3200) will automatically downclock to the same speed as the lower speed(PC2700) module.
-
ok so the memory that comes with the v2000z is a lower speed and the new memory aftermarket has to downclock? Is that a negative thing??
What a good ram manufacture to go with? kinston? crucial? corsair?
Im looking to adding another 512 stick - can someone give me the site or name of theirs that they put in their v2000z -
Though some may argue otherwise, Kingston, Crucial, and Corsair are all good. I'd buy which ever of the three is cheapest, unless you have a brand preference. Even if you're going to be using the stock 256MB stick, I'd still go ahead and pay the extra few bucks for the PC3200. That way, you'll have the option to upgrade the 256MB stick later and have your memory running at PC3200. I bought my Corsair ValueSelect memory off Newegg.

John - Im planning on using 1 256 stock stick from hp and adding a 512 or 1gb aftermarket in the other slot. That is doable right? What kind of memory should i go with for the v2000z - could u post a site.
i see that u have 2 512 corsair pc3200 - are those both aftermarket? is it better to just replace them both?? -
I removed the stock 256MB and replaced it with 2 of these:

I chose to upgrade to 1GB because of the 128MB that is allocated to video, leaving 896MB. You can choose whatever you want to do. Don't worry about the downclocking of the memory. It won't make an earth shattering difference. -

You can mix module sizes and makes - you won't have any issues.
I'd get DDR333, since that is what is recommended by the manufacturer for your laptop. Crucial, Kingston, OCZ - they make great memory as well. -
Why not PC3200? The price delta is not much, plus the Turions can handle it. Wait... I'm not sure about the Semprons. What processor did you get radha?
-
so im getting a turion ml30 - with one 256 stick stock - going to add in an aftermarket one stick of 1gb or 512.
Can i keep in the stick that comes with it and just pop in another stick in the second slot or do i have to replace both? (i though i can mix and match the sticks - does the laptop run smoother with 2 new sticks?) -
You can leave the stock memory in if you wish to do so. As for if it runs smoother with 2 new sticks... I'm assuming you meant with PC3200... I'd imagine so, though I replaced the memory as soon as my laptop arrived.
-
If you do decide to get a 1GB stick, I'd take out the 256MB if I were you. That is if you go with the PC3200. 1GB is a good amount of memory and 256MB more of it won't help much with the downclocking.
-
ok how about if i keep in the stock 256 the one that hp ships with it in and just add in a 512 from newegg into the other slot?
would that be ok ? -
Yes. Again, I would still get a stick of 512MB PC3200 if I were you. I just checked Newegg.com and it pretty much costs the same as PC2700. That way, if you decide to upgrade your memory again later on, you'll have both sticks running at PC3200.
-
now im confused - can i get the hpshopping stock one come at 3200? is the after market 3200?
if the stock is lower is that not going to work with a higher aftermarket one? -
No, the stock memory that HP will use is PC2700. You can't have them install PC3200. Once you have your notebook, install the 512MB PC3200 memory that you will buy (aftermarket) in the open slot. Your notebook will automatically allocate 128MB (also 32MB or 64MB, if you decide to change it in BIOS) for video, leaving you with 640MB of system memory. Although the faster 512MB PC3200 will be downclocked to match the existing 256MB PC2700 speed, you won't have any problems.

Let me clear things up:
HP will ship 256MB PC2700 memory with your Compaq V2000Z
That's the bare minimum you can choose when customizing
You can choose to install aftermarket memory yourself
To do this...
Buy 512MB PC3200 from anywhere (Newegg is usually cheap)
Flip your notebook over and remove the memory latch
Install the 512MB PC3200 in the open slot
Screw the memory latch back on
Turn your computer on and have fun
That's it. Don't worry about the different speeds, it will automatically be adjusted.
