I'd like to upgrade RAM on my notebook Sony VAIO PCG-4F1L and would like to know the max amount of a physical memory.
BTW what kind of RAM should I buy?

Google says it's 1.5GB max and 512MB of it is soldered to the mobo. In theory any type of DDR2 should work, but with an older machine like this, I'd consider sticking with PC4200 or PC5300.

EDIT: Small chance it might need proprietary DIMMs. Not totally sure on that.

Crucial also confirms that the laptop supports up to 1.5 GB. Sony can be something of a fussbudget about being proprietary, so do a little extra homework before you purchase additional memory. :)
