I recently purchased a Dell XPS M140 with the standard config. of 2x256 MB RAM; I figured I could probably save a few bucks by purchasing the memory myself.

I have upgraded RAM and other components in desktops but this is my first laptop.
So basically, I have a few questions:

    a) How easy is it to upgrade the RAM on the M140 (also what type of RAM is compatible, etc.)?

    b) Can anyone point out some deals on RAM online (probably 1 GB)?

    c) Any tips on upgrading laptop RAM and specifically on the M140?

    Thanks.

Its is pretty easy in most laptops but in the XPs M140, one of the RAM slots is located under the keyboard. It is still accessible but you"ll have to go through with some disassembly. The other slot is located on the bottom of the laptop and can be easily accessed by opening a bay to the memory.

    The M140 uses a 200 pin DDR2 PC2 4200/4300 SODIMM.

Newegg has some pretty good prices on DDR2 RAM's...

I would suggest buying in the midrange as some of the chepest RAM's tend to be unreliable.

The service manual for the laptop should explain all the steps involved in upgrading the RAM...

Removing the keyboard seems annoying, maybe I could just swap out the 256 MB module in the back and put in a 1024 GB one?

Yes, you could do that.... Newegg and Zipzoomfly often have very similar prices. However zipzoomlfy offers free shipping, where newegg charges you like $5. would recommend newegg or zipzoomfly. But removing the keybaord isn't too bad. Refer to the service manual for the XPS M140. My friend did it to his.. Took only 10 minutes..

Would there be any performance issues with having a 1024MB module and a 256MB one?

I went through newegg and got 2GB of Transcend for about $120 back in December for my XPS M140. Check it out.
