We've seen HDD prices go way down (or to the same effect, capacity shoot up). I'm wondering what you folks think about RAM prices. I'd like to upgrade my RAM, but I'm not sure how much the prices are going to change. I'm currently thinking they won't get much cheaper in say, 6 months, but shouldn't get any more expensive...

    Any thoughts?

Yeah they shouldnt get more expensive. Id say once Vista starts to become main stream (1.5-2 years) you'll see 2gig sticks alot more, and alot cheaper then they are now, Im saying an 8 gig desktop would cost somewhere around what a 4 gig does now, possibly even less.

As for notebooks I would think the same, excpt 4 gig notebooks would cost what 2 gig ones cost now. I mean it costs $3000 more to go from 1-4 gigs on a dell XPS now, but about $250 to go from 1-2. In about 2 years it will cost that for 4 gigs. Im just making educated guesses on this, knowing what Vista, being a 64-bit OS, will likley do to the RAM market.

I am 100% positive that the ram prices will fall a lot faster then 1-2 years. The biggest reason is that they now have DDR3 out and that ram is very slowly starting to hit the mainstream market. It wasnt that long ago when DDR2 hit the market, and once it did DDR ram prices plumitted. I really cannot see that the prices would take that long to go down. But I deffinatly agree that with the new vista system ram will be more sought after then it is now.

Ah well I didnt know that DDR3 had been released, that definitly acclelerates my time frame up to about 6 months-1 year. Well for DDR2 I mean, its prices would be what I said before, but im sure that DDR3 will go for a priemum price.

While memory prices will go down in the short run, it is a given that memory that fits your notebook will become very expensive within 5 years because memory production will be allocated toward newer technologies. For example, PC100 memory (for use in notebooks made during the 90s) is rare and very expensive because of the fact that few are made anymore.

Do you see 1GB DDR SODIMMs dropping to around $75 retail CAD anytime in the next 6 months to a year? I'm still waiting for these... slow price decreases :(

While we're on the subject of RAM and a future outlook, is it possible for a notebook that can take up to 2gigs of ram to be enabled to take 4gigs ? I mean, is it a matter of hardware, or will a bios update do the trick ?
