Hello all,
I bought a set of 2X4GB RAMs from Transcend a while ago after matching all my specs as stated by DellPartsPeople website and Corsair compatibility site. The RAMs are recognized perfectly at their correct frequencies by the BIOS and shows full available physical memory. There are no board error beeps either.
But the Laptop fails to boot up into Win7 or Ubuntu. I even tried cleaning out the HD and reinstalling Win7 but boot loop remained. I even tried mixing and matching the RAM one at a time with my default RAMs (1X2GB Hynix and 1X1GB Samsung for a total of 3GB). Default RAMs run just fine.
Please suggest what I should do.
Thank You for having a look at the problem.
By the way it's a Dell Studio 1558 Ci3 first gen.

That is an old platform, but should still work with a 2x4GB RAM configuration. Win7 is 64bit?
Have all the BIOS updates been performed that are available for this model?
Is the WiFi or other adaptor cards stock? Or have they been upgraded? How about the HDD? Is it the original or is an SSD installed now?
Have you tried resetting the BIOS to defaults?
Try addressing the above and see if any of that helps.
I would even try downloading Win10 to test if that O/S boots up properly.
Are any and all the drivers up to date in the O/S?
Does it boot up at all with a clean install? Does a restore work?
Hopefully, some of the above will point you to a resolution.

Thanks tilleroftheearth for your prompt reply. The basic was a 7200 WD at SATA 0 and DVD opto drive at SATA 1. I upgraded to AdataSP610 SSD at SATA 0 and 5200rpm Seagate 1TB at SATA 1. Graphic and Processor are stock. No problems ever with upgrades.
All drivers including BIOS was updated at the time. But I never got around to trying Win10. Will try.
Thanks and keep you guys posted. -

The important steps are:
- Insert one stick of 4GB RAM
- Test each slot with each stick.
- That will be 4 tests for the above to test all possible combinations.
- If the above test works, test with both sticks of ram.
- Test both slots with both sticks.
- That will be an additional 2 tests for all possible combinations.
- Test both slots with both sticks.
- Don't forget to remove the battery and AC power while swapping the memory!
- Test each slot with each stick.
- Reset BIOS to defaults.
- Repeat steps above.
- Test with HDD and clean Win7/Win10 install.
- Repeat steps above.
If the above doesn't show any obvious issues with the ram sticks, I would test different RAM modules at this point.
Hope you get this figured out. - Insert one stick of 4GB RAM
RAM upgrade 8GB max allowed on board
