I have tried to upgrade the original ram of 512MB by adding a 2GB module into what was an empty external "memory socket"..
I have used a Kingston KTH-ZD80000b/2G - equiv to HP part no EM995AA.

On restarting the laptop the system does not recognise there is extra ram. Not in the BIOS or the XP Pro system info. Just the original.

Have I been sold the wrong ram for this job? Or does this laptop use max 1GB memory modules?

    Any advice gratefully appreciated

DDR2 SDRAM, 533- or 667-MHz, two SODIMM slots supporting dual channel memory, 256/512/1024-MB upgradeable
to 2048-MB; supports up to 4096-MB

    You probably have bad ram.

BIOS Constraint? Check first if you have any updates on the BIOS. XP version - 32/64Bits? Try also swapping the ram slot, putting the 2 gig into the other slot.

    cheers ...
