First will Xp reckognize 2,5gb ram
my manual says (i have toshiba Sat pro A100-828) it can do max 4GB ram(it does have two slots only)
and it can be upgraded with following

    PC4200 and sodimm-200

second the ram i want to buy is this will it work (worth 60£ or not)

    CAS Latency : CL4

Yes it will if you mean 2.5GB. I would not do 2.5 read other threads on 1st or second page of this section to learn why. I would buy 2X1GB sticks. About $60 to $80.

£60 for a 2GB ram stick is about right for UK prices. Yes XP will recognise 2.5GB of ram.

i read that but i have the stupid hypermemory(atix1600128mb>>>521mb) so i thought that those 500mb goes to video while rest runs the pc? isnt it far better like this ?

Don't think it works like that (allocation) so you only have 1GB running in "dual channel" out of 2.5 and in a perfect theoretical world at best 40% chance of using 128 bit bus but really much less, I do not think the 1/2GB is worth that. A 3GB config at least has a 67% shot in a theoretical world and gives 1/2GB more wich is 2GB running dual. Just my opinion many disagree.

so conclusion must be replacing the 512mb ram with 2 *1 gb ram for 50£ is more valuable than adding additional 2gb of ram?

*my pc does not support dual channel!

If it does not support "dual channel" then forget everything I have said and 2.5 is fine!!!!!!!! Can't believe does not support Dual channel but if so more RAM better any config!

I think you are wrong the Intel 945 chipset supports DDR2 "dual channel" RAM so if true don't forget anything I said!!!!!!!!!! 2X1GB or 1X1GB + 1X2GB! Nothing wrong w/using 512MB stick as a paper wieght!

the crucial test which is also little bit stupid says that my pc does not support dual channel but it also says that i can only take max 1gb of ram per module which is obviously a lie

Mine says the same and it is wrong so do not trust that, I have called them and talked to them about that they have no answer. CPU-Z is better and free if you are still unsure. I have used that and SiSoft Sandra (free) says I have a 128 bit bus which means dual channel.

Where? Which tab? Also don't you have 1 stick 512MB RAM anyway? Which 64 bit would be correct.

OK but where are you seeing 64 bit? I only ask because on mine I do not see. But 64 is right since you only have 1 stick. If you ever download SiSoft Sandra I would like to know your bandwidth.

I studied what yours said and compared to mine. SANDRA is somtimes wrong. Says mine has 4 memory slots and I now it only has 2, it says I can install 4GB but My MFG says only 2GB. I guess I would trust the MFG you have an Intel MoBo I will see if I can find. Could you run the Memory Bandwidth benchmark and report your speed?

If your laptop's manual says it can only handle max 1GB per slot (2GB total), then it might just be true. I wouldn't attempt to use more memory than that without getting a definitive answer from the manufacturer.

And no, SiSoft or CPU-Z aren't really relevant here, since this might be a bios-specific limitation or something else that they don't recognize.

And now, you won't be able to run dual-channel unless both RAM sticks are exactly the same size. a 2GB and a 512MB will only run in single channel.

However, usually, the performance boost of dual-channel is only a couple of percent, so it's not all that important.

im on school so i will have results in 3 hours

and can someone tell me if kingston wants me to buy a much more expensive module or is it true that it will be incompatible

With regards to your query we can advise that the memory module with the part number KVR533D2S4/2G is a ValueRAM generic memory module. These modules are manufactured according to general technical specifications of motherboards and meet the JEDEC standard. However, they are not tested on any motherboard and therefore we cannot guarantee compatibility of these modules with a specific system.

According to the information about your system that you have provided, we would suggest that you use the memory module with part number (see link):

    http://www.ec.kingston.com/ecom/con...ite+Pro+A100-828&distributor=0&submit1=Search

These parts are designed to be used on a Toshiba Sattelite pro A100-828 and have been tested on this machine. Therefore we guarantee compatibility and provide help in case of any trouble.

Although technical specifications are quite similar we do not recommend that you use the module KVR533D2S4/2G on Toshiba as we will not provide you with either technical support or a replacement.

We trust that the above information will be of assistance to you.

They are messing with peoples ignorance, that JEDEC standard they mention is what is important. They are trying to sell you a different kind that “coincidently” costs more. I went on NewEgg http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.aspx?SubCategory=381&name=Laptop-Memory
You do not need to buy a kit (I only saw one) just buy 2 of the same. Remember it is not the RAM itself that is dual channel it is the MoBo that does that. You should expect to pay about $80 to $90 (2X1GB) after tax and S&H. One advantage of 2X1GB is you should should be able to up the speed from 533Mhz to 667Mhz it looks like your system supports. Do make a separate thread asking once you have picked out so someone else can confirm. Pick a PC4200/4300 DDR2 200pin SODIMM (533Mhz) and PC5300/5400 DDR2 200pin SODIMM in case the faster is in fact not compatible. Cas Latency of 4 is standard for 4200, 5 for 5300 anything lower better but costs more. On your link it said your system uses both 533Mhz and 667Mhz, so that is why I think you can use the faster. Brand does not really matter, but nothing wrong spending a few more dollars if it makes you feel better, lots of brand names on the site for good price.
