I got the best buy sales special Toshiba A205. It has 2x512Mb sticks. I would like to upgrade RAM (I chose Kingston). Should I buy:
- 2 x 1Gb sticks
- 1 x 2 Gb stick
I am pretty sure 2Gb is enough for now, but I can upgrade in future. I would use Vista (I think it can be upgraded to 64bit?) and also a 64 bit Ubuntu (if I go above 3Gb RAM in future).
So speed wise, upgrade wise - what is the better solution - 2 sticks, or one?

Really depends on your needs. If you play a lot of games and multitask and plan on keeping your notebook for at least 2 or 3 years then might as well get the 2gb stick and save one slot for future upgradeability. But for most users 2gb is the sweet spot, even for Vista.

Speed wise 2X1GB is the answer, no doubts no contest. Does it matter? Depends. You will likely be fine with either so 2GB stick does offer upgradeability. What is the cost difference?

Here where I come from (Macedonia, Europe) 1gb stick is $30, while 2gb stick is $70.

Get 2X1GB, no question.
