I know a lot of people, including Tom Hardware indicate the 5K320 is much more cooler than the WD3200BEVT 5400rpm. I'm wondering if there's a radical difference in power consumption, heat & noise comparing those two drives.
Also is the power consumption much higher comparing the WD3200BEVT to my original stock drive my T61 came with (a Scorpio Blue WD800BEVS)
Thanks in advance.

My WD3200BEVT doesn't top 45*C and is quiet irrespective of the AAM setting.
A.T. TOM's H/W, the WD Blue series have a high power consumption, but I don't find the drive affecting battery life much.... -
If you need maximum battery life the 5K320 is the better choice, but the difference is probably less than 10 minutes on 3 hours battery life.
So it will be hard to notice. So will the differences in performance be. -
i would pick hitachi, simply because its known for its reliability....however, you might find them a bit loud.
I have a 7k320 and love it....keep in mind that most hard drives are adaptive, so if you find the drive noisy...just give it about 15 or so mins to tone down the speed. -
Thanks for the replies so far.
My main concern is drive heat noise & heat. I don't use my laptop too much ob battery power. I've been also a Hitachi HDD user for years and years in the past. As a matter of fact my Scorpio Blue 80GB my T61 is my first WD I've ever used on a laptop.
But now I'm inclining to get the WD5000BEVT drive. 150USD only at Newegg. On the contrary the WD3200BEVT is 90USD available through a national provider in my country. The analysis on which drive should I get is always a difficult choice to make considering budget/size/conditions/shipping, etc.
I will see if I can get a better deal for the 320G Scorpio, something like 80 bucks or less and go from there. -
I've seen several people complain about the heat of the 3200BEVT. Some people have a drive that is not affected though, like Andy. This may be because of better cooling in their notebook.
It makes sense that it would produce more heat than average, since the power consumption is the highest of the 320GB/5400rpm drives.

my Lenovo T400 WD 3200BEVT seldom gets above 36 degree C that is after I tweak a lot of settings to minimize disk activities.
Radical Difference? HITACHI 5K320 vs WD3200BEVT
