I want to get more ram for my laptop and another hdd for my desktop. Could someone please tell me how I can know if the ram and hdd is compatible with each? I'm not super hardware savvy so I don't really know what the 184/240/etc. pins or PC/PC2/667/800/etc. means.

The laptop is a month old XPS m1530 and the desktop is a 4-5 year old Emachines T6524.

    Thanks!

I don't know about your desktop, but for your laptop you should check out the ram deals thread for "667 MHz, DDR2 SODIMM, PC5400 RAM". Basically, as long as you've got DDR2 SODIMMs, they will work.

You should checkout the manuals or datasheet for each module and machine....That should be the first thing to do before upgrading..!!
I am not very good with old desktops....
But that emachine should support the PC-3200 184-pin DIMM (DDR 400) - maybe max 4GB
Whereas the XPS M1530 should support the PC2-5300 200-pin SODIMM (DDR2-667)....max 4 gig

The XPS M1530 can take in any new 2.5 " SATA HDD, ~9.5mm ones, not the 12.5mm HDDs, i.e. not the Hitachi 5K500

Or run a scan at Crucial or MemoryX, with the respective machines to know about the proper memory upgrades....and the ram deals thread has already been linked to you above..!! If you are in the UK, have a look at Offtek as well..!!

Your RAM question has been answered. Desktop? We don't know stinking desktops here! I suspect you have a PATA interface called IDE vs SATA. As said do a little research on the documentation.
