    Hi

Sorry for the dumb question. I have an Inspiron 6000 I would like to upgrade the ram. If I buy the ram from DELL it will cost twice the prie and will take ten working days to arrive. The guy from DELL told me that I can buy a generic chip but I'm a bit confused. On the specs of my system it says that my chip is a 256 mb DDR2 400MHZ chip. However ever shop that I asked say that it's impossible. The ram is either standard DDR that works at 333MHZ or 400MHZ or DDR 2 that runs at 533 MHZ.
So which one should I buy, the DDR 1 or DDR 2, they are in the same price range here.

    Thanks

You need DDR2-400 (PC2-3200), 200-pin So-DIMM's. The people you asked must have been clueless. :p

I recommend going to Newegg.com and looking at their memory. The best brands of memory are Kingston, Crucial, and Corsair. Very reliable. Here is Newegg's page for DDR2-400MHz notebook RAM.

    Thanks man,

The problem is that I'm in South Africa, so newegg is out of the question. Tell me if I buy the 533 MHZ chip will it work fine in the laptop, I mean will it underclock itself or will it not be compatable at all?

You could stick a 533MHz stick in there, that would work. If you already have a 400MHz stick, the faster chip will downclock itself to match the slower one's speed.
