    Do you mean a chip?

    If you inserted the correct type chip into your pc, it'll work fine without installing. You might want to get someone who knows something about pcs to make sure it is the correct type of ram chip (Sorry, but saying this is the truth :eek:)

    Correct. That is all that you need to do. You might want to think about upping the size of your swap file, if you have that manually set (right click Miy Computer - Properties - Advanced - Performance Settings - Advanced - Change).

    Why? You should, if anything, DECREASE the size of your swap file. Swap is mostly there for when RAM runs out. If you add more memory, no reason to waste disk space on swap that will never be used. For 2GB of RAM, I have a 512MB swap file that has never been filled.

    Swap file size should at least by as large as your RAM - no? I thought I read somewhere like 2.5 times the size of your RAM. To each his own. I would not have a swap file that small however.

    Sorry to bring up the post again but i have just found out that my 1gb ram is not installed ( system configation ). I put the 1gb ram into the left over slot, and booted up my laptop. Is there anything else i have to do ? , i described my situation a bit better now.

    This = my chip http://www.pcnextday.co.uk/products/ProductDetail.asp?ProductCode=3790-1030

    My laptop = http://www.pcnextday.co.uk/products/ProductDetail.asp?ProductCode=3382-6301

    Its really annoying, also is it possible that i put the ram in wrongly ?.

    Arghhhhh soz to bother everyone again.
    Thanks.

    I've seen that, too. Since you won't take my word as a programmer and general computing expert, look here, search the page for "how big". You're just wasting disk space.

    Hey Pitabred, I have a similar config with 2GB, but when I check the modified/access times on my page file it shows today at 11:00 AM in the morning. This wouldn't be a big deal except my computer was just running bit torrent at that time (it's been on for a couple of days now). What could be accessing the page file if a page fault didn't occur?

    RAM is plug and play...have you tried using just the 1GB stick? Make sure you lined up the pins correctly, as in you didn't have to jump on it to force it in the slot? Locked it into place, if possible (plastic grips on either side of the chip)?
