 Hi, I am slightly confused right now, my room mate just got a stick of 512MB PC2700 DDR 333 for his Dell Inspiron 1100 and we put it in, now it won't start up. It turns on for like 20 seconds and then turns off. The old sticks of 128MB say PC2100. Is this the problem? Is PC2700 compatible with PC2100????

Also, the Dell website says the Inspiron 1100 maximum memory upgrade is 512MB...The guy at Best Buy said it is 1 gig???

    Any suggestions???!!

    Thanks!

It is compatible, so that's not the problem.

I'm guessing it's a back stick of ram. If the computer works fine with the other memory, but always crashes with the new one, them it's definitely a bad stick.

Look here, page 115. Max RAM 1GB - two 512MB sticks. Assuming the new stick was seated properly, I'd have thought it would work, but clock itself down. You'll have to wait for a sharper mind than mine to check in on the compatibility issue. Good luck.

Edit: I'm a slow typist; I see that the sharper mind has already checked in. lol

    Try memtest86+
    http://www.memtest.org/

It has a bootable CD, use that and run the program from that CD.
See what it says about the ram

Try re-seating the stick, make sure it is snug.
