Hi, i just installed 8gb 4x2 kingston hyperx 1600mhz sodimm ram KHX1600C9S3K2/8GX on my m18xR1 2720qm and when i run cpu-z its tells me in the SPD tab that the ram is PC3-10700(667mhz) but in the memory tab calling it dual ram its running 800mhz 9,9,9,27. I have been into bios and changed the xmp to the second profile as stated by information online from kingston but still its reads the above. Now i removed all existing ram from the m18x and installed the new ram in slots 2 and 4 because I dont really want to go under the keyboard again anytime soon it was quite painful. Have i put it in the wrong slots should i have put it in 1 and 2 or 1 and 3, everything seems to be running fine im just really unsure.

    kind regards Euan

'speed step'? Uhm, not even in the ball park.

Yeah, it is best to install the RAM modules into the proper slots to ensure not only dual channel operation, but also help the system be as stable as it can be.

When it was running at 800Mhz, that means it was running at specs (I'm pretty sure).

What does your manual say for proper RAM installation? That is what I would be following (not a random poll of people saying that it is okay, or not, to leave it in random slots that are simply easier to access).

    Good luck.

    800 x 2

    = 1600mhz

Everything is normal...oh and for max performance, you should be in XMP 2 in the bios if you're running the HyperX 1600's. Your Windows Experience Index for memory will go up 0.2 - 0.3 if you do this

Dual channel has nothing to do with the operating clock speed of the RAM. It is Double Data Rate (DDR) RAM which means that when it's operating at 800MHz, it is operating like SDR at 1600MHz. If it is reported to operate at 800MHz, then it's good.

I would check the voltage specs for that RAM though. Some desktop HyperX operates at 1600MHz at 1.6V instead of 1.5V and you have to set that in the bios to get to operate at maximum speed. It could also be reading error on the software's part.

Thought id add this could be just an error on my laptop, I understand the dual ram part what i dont get is the PC3-10700(667mhz) lol also switched the ram into slots 0 and 1 dont see a difference sorry all this just came to me now.

    kind regards Euan

What the PC3 10700 (667MHz) spec says is that, that is the nominal/default speed rating of these modules.

As shown in the table underneath it though (and confirmed on the other screenshot) is that with the XMP profile, the RAM is running at 800MHz which, being DDR RAM is equivalent to 1600MHz (as also noted by others).

In other words? You're good! :)
