I just got a new laptop, Presario V5101. It says it has 512, but when I checked on the laptop, it only reports roughly 350ish. What happened to the rest of it?

does it have a integrated gpu? If it does, then it would be taking system ram for video ram.

otherwise the ram could be damaged.

most video cards use the ram as their memory
what video card do you have
if you arent concerned with video quality you can set aside more of your ram for other uses

as has been said, if you have an integrated video card, the system will allocate a portion of your (system) RAM to the video card at startup. if you have 512 mbs of RAM, the available RAM shown should be 512 less some multiple of 8, for example: 512 - 32 / 64 / 128 / etc.

To set lower video RAM allowances go into the BIOS, the option is somewhere in there, if I remember correctly.
