Hi. Tomorrow, I'll be getting my laptop, and I plan on upgrading from 1 GB of RAM to 2 GB within my winter break from college.
I have a few questions, so that I know I buy the right RAM.
1- Since the notebook will be coming with a stick of 1 GB RAM, is it utmost necessary that I buy the RAM from the same company as the RAM that is included? Or is it just recommended that I buy the same company ram? Will there be a difference if the two sticks are from a different company? I will try to get the same exact RAM as in the notebook.
2- My CPU is a 2.2 GHz Core2Duo-should i be getting a PC5400 or a PC5300?
3- If my Notebook uses a PC5400, and I put in a PC5300 and vice versa, what will happen as far as performance is concerned?
(the only thing I know about the RAM of my Notebook is that it is a DDR2 667)
Thanks in advance for the help.

Those 2 are exactly the same, so it doesn't matter which you get. And you can get any brand you want, it won't make a difference.
So go out and buy a pc5300/pc5400 ddr2 667MHz ram stick and it will work perfectly. -
No its not. get the EXACT specs that is required for YOUR LAPTOP. you didnt mention any specific company but my gateway specified 5300 ram and i tried 5400, it didnt recognize it. so i had to get 5300.
donot get company ram upgrades since they are usually more expensive and you can get them at a fraction of the price they charge you. -
If someone were to take a 2.4GHz core 2 duo chip and name it a Celeron M, do you think it will magically turn into a single core celeron chip?
I have 5400 ram in my computer and it's worked fine for over a year. -
if there is no difference why are there 5300 models and 5400 models? obviously to specify some difference.
anyway im trying to help the guy here, and the safest way to go is whatever is specified on your laptop. choose the wrong one and go through all the trouble is up to you -
If you read up in the RAM Deals thread, you'll see a notice about it. PC5400 merely indicates that the RAM was tested to work at 675MHz, whereas 'normal' PC5300 RAM is tested at 667MHz. Considering computers without OCing will run the RAM at 667 regardless...PC5400 is nothing but a marketing scam to make more $$$.
