A friend of mine is planning to buy a Dell Studio 15 or 17 and wants my advice. I know and understand the differences in the technical specs of the CPU's, but I haven't seen enough performance data/benchmarks to gauge real world performance....

So, I'd appreciate some additional perspective/input on how these three processors perform, comparatively-

    Intel T5750 (2.0GHz, 667MHz FSB, 2MB L2)
    Intel T5850 (2.16GHz, 667MHz FSB, 2MB L2)
    Intel T8100 (2.1GHz, 800MHz FSB, 3MB L2)

I'm particularly curious how closely the T5850 and T8100 perform to one another.

I'm also wondering about the value/performance factor of each one....(i.e. return on investment or bang-for-the-buck). The T5850 is a $50 upgrade from the T5750. The T8100 is a $125 upgrade from the T5750 ($75 more than the T5850).

Battery life isn't a big concern and it will have a discrete graphics card, fyi.

    Thanks!

Whats the notebook going to be used for?

I assume youve seen the PCmark05 and wPrime benchmark scores between those cpu's?

What is he going to be doing with this laptop? If nothing more than email and web, the slowest, cheapest would work.

    ^ Agree.

You will only notice the higher speed of the T8100 when doing CPU intensive tasks like decoding/encoding, maths and video editing.

A T8100 does SuperPI 1M in 23 seconds. The T5750 will take about 26 seconds. (educated guess)
