Hi,
I recently got a new dell laptop(OS windows 8) 4 days backand started stress testing it. Yesterday I started stress testing the harddisk I got Reallocation Event Count warning when using HDTune and HDD scan utilities. However I was not able to get this warning on any other software. I must have tried atleast 5-6 other utilities. I contacted dell but since their software didnt report this, they said the disk is fine and that I shouldnt worry about it.
what is the possibility that HDTune and HDD scan are erroneously reporting the SMART values because no other software was able to get this error. I had done several tests. I could return it and ask for a replacement but how can I convince dell to send a replacement laptop when their software doest report any error. This topic has been discussed several times here but couldnt find an answer I was content with.
Please do answer my queries. Below is the output:

I think a little differently than you: even if one utility shows a warning - then I would be returning this system. Especially if this is going to be holding important data and/or you'll be depending on this notebook for the next few years.
Which HDD are we talking about?
Either way, if the next system does the same thing: consider an SSD based platform instead (and seriously do not consider Dell anymore, imo. If, (if) you want the most stable, coolest running and fully usable system for the next few years).
Good luck. -

Yup as Tiller said for a brand new machine, I would return it for another one. Given it's practically brand new, you don't want to deal with a dead HDD so soon.
Personally I can't stand not having an SSD in a laptop, so that'd be the first upgrade for me. -
Brand new or refurb? What make/ model drive?

Hi, I have the exact problem you're having on my brand new Asus vivobook that I've had for about 3 weeks. I'm planning on taking it either to best buy or Asus to get it repaired or replaced. I'm just curious as to how and why this happens, even on new laptops.

Thanks for the replies. It is a seagate make. Model no ST500LT012. It is a refurb. forgot to mention this. how can I get dell to replace this laptop. they dont seem to accept the report I provided them.

With Dell: my recommendation:
Don't even mention this issue. Simply ask for a refund as per the policy Tsunade_Hime indicates.
Now (with money in hand) if you want to take another chance with Dell - go ahead (the 'refund' period just got reset to another 21 days). If you simply ask for a new system to replace the one you have - you will be WELL PAST YOUR REFUND PERIOD by the time the new machine exhibits anything that may concern you (even if it's for another issue). That is of course, if they don't try to 'fix' the system you have. (More time wasted). -
