How could a hard drive be damaged that warrants a replacement? I you dropped it and broke it, warranty service will not cover it, will it?

1) Someone sells you a system and wants to keep the original hard drive so they replace it with a similar one.
2) You buy a system and hate a particular brand hard drive that's in it. Personally, I am not partial to Maxtor (Seagate), Toshiba, Samsung, or Hitachi hard drives. Therefore, I'd swap out the HDD, but then again, I'd probably go with a larger capacity if I did.
3) And yeah, possibly to swap out a damaged hard drive with a replacement.
Are you planning on buying something off eBay or a private seller and this is why you are asking this question? -
garetjax, thank for the quick reply! I was editing my question while you were already replying!
To answer your question, actually I am exactly the first type of people you mentioned: I am considering selling my laptop, and if I can get a replacement HDD then I won't have to go through the hassle of wiping out my current HDD. I get extended warranty from my cc co., so I am just thinking, you know, how to get a new HDD like the old one, how to make a better excuse
'cause HDD costs quite a sum

you can use the one you have as an external hard drive and not tell anyone that the new one you bought actually went in your laptop

I think the question is: how can I damage my HDD to be able to claim the warrnty?
Reason to replace the HDD?
