    Hello.

I have this old Acer aspire 5920G I got used from my friend.
    I´m trying to repair it.

Its video card , I think its fried. Crash or pxiels on simpel video load.

I have tried the oven trick on the nvidia 8600m GS, that worked for a while, but the crash can back yesterday.
I readed that you can replace the mxm video card if bios is modded.

Any cheap mxm video cards a round?

Best regard, new member from Greenland, Nuuk =)

Janman78, get a 1GB GT240M MXM II if you want performance, or any compatible ATI/AMD, preferably pulled from another Acer, to save some money. Avoid other Nvidia MXM II cards, except for maybe 9600M GT, but the price difference with GT240M is not enough to justify much worse performance - they are unreliable crap, waste of money and will fail you.

    Hello Starlight5.

Just want the laptop to run again, maybe the repair project is bigger than I thought and expensive.
Where is the used parts good to look for and good price ?

Janman78, try local private ads website first. If not, there's eBay and Aliexpress; the former has better buyer protection, thus I recommend it. Link.

    I have a GT 240M 1GB DDR3 lying around.
Got it from that same seller actually, and it produced the infamous problems with freezing when the card was stressed.
Mind you, he did mention that they tested the gpu extensively in 3d mark and other gpu intensive benchmarks to ensure stability... so it might just come down to a problem of loose hardware incompatibility, or possibly drivers causing issues (though I'm not ruling out faulty VRAM).

Dunno how much the postage to Greenland would cost, but I doubt it would be very expensive considering its a very light object.

I suppose he meant so! ;)

If you want maximum performance get the mxm II HD4650 1GB DDR3 from ebay.

Problem in general is that spare parts are quite expensive. If you want to get the Acer somewhat suit able for daily use, you have to maxx out the RAM and throw in a cheap SSD as well.
That will be ~200€. It's questionable if it is worth it. But if done so, you can play Crysis 2 in high settings with about 20-25fps. Or at least use it for a while in an acceptable manner.

CaerCadarn, that Toshiba card is ROMless and will require BIOS modification, isn't it?

Uuuups, good Point! Just focussed on the MXM II form factor.
Not sure about that, but I think at least a BIOS Update to the latest Revision has to be made:

    http://www.mxm-upgrade.com/5920G.html

Dunno, if a (v)Bios mod is needed too? A detailed thread is found over here:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/acer-mxm-models-and-cards.396320/

So at least before purchasing @Janman78 should check, if he has the dGPU Version.

Edit: Apparently 5920G is dGPU.

Janman78, since it's listed as compatible with 5920G, should work. Don't forget to salvage the bracket from your old card!

    CaerCadarn
, vBIOS will have to be integrated into mb BIOS if the card is romless indeed. The alternative - soldering a vBIOS chip to the card - is even messier.

    Good find!

Should be Plug & Play. I recommend using DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller) to remove the Nvidia Driver before doing a clean install of the new one. Should be the AMD 13.7 Legacy Driver.

Did a quick Research and it has a vBios Chip on it. But you're right anyway, you probably would have to mod the vBios as this one is a Toshiba one.

Hello Starlight5 & CaerCadarn, if I buy it, where can I find this vbios mod?

Janman78, just buy the one you linked, and everything should be OK without vBIOS mods...

Hey, have not bought a new videovard yet, upgraded to Window 10 x64.
The Acer laptop runs better now. Maybe Win10 is better at power usage control or drivers.
