    Apologies for a double post, but I'm not getting any feedback and was worried that It was not in an area visible enough.

    original: http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/gtx680m-driver-stopped-working-on-alien-mx17r2.799221/

    Laptop: MX17xR3
    OS: Win 7 Home Prem, SP1

    Problem manifested as computer freezing during splash screen. Running display in basic mode at the moment.

    Old card ran hot and burned out. Upgraded to the GTX680M with a moded driver based on advice from this forum. Worked fine (with some minor loss of functionality) for a good while, but just recently, the driver seems to no longer work. Trying to do an update tells me that the card is not compatible. I have the old driver installer, and modded driver file, But as yet am not getting it to work right. Perhaps some new windows update caused this? Problem began when I tried to load an update to a game that was working fine (may or may not be related). The original postings from my original upgrade are closed to comments, so can't pick the thread back up there.

    Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Get the NVIDIA driver and download the driver inf from the laptopvideo2go forum.. Replace the inf in the extracted drivers folder called "Display Driver" which is created after the driver install fails the first time... Run the setup again and the driver should install!

    Thanks for touching base.

    DevMngr shows just a standard video card, which I think is normal when no driver is installed. The Nvidia site can't autodetect my GPU.

    I've tried installing the formerly working setup program as well as the newest one, and both give the error of incompatible graphics hardware.

    Where should I go next?

    btw, that video card also kept me from doing the free windows 10 upgrade months ago.

    So what I said was run the installer and it will fail.. Now go and download the modded inf file from laptopvideo2go and find the extracted driver on your hard drive, go to the display driver folder in it and replace the inf.. Run the extracted installer and driver should install now

    Not sure if you are still around, but thanks for the reply. I put this on hold for a while because of a crazy work schedule.

    I think I'm doing all that. The problem I get now though is that when I reboot, I get a black screen and the system seems locked up. If I boot in safe mode, I see the new card in device managers, so i think the driver is working to some extent. But when I try to reboot normal, I get the hung black screen with fans running fast.

    Any ideas? Should I start over?

    Posted from safe mode.

    FYI don't use the Nvidia experience to update your driver. When you install use Custom option and uncheck the Nvidia experience install I found this caused more problems then it helped. v3 Nvidia experience caused more headache then it helps. I never use MOD driver unless that is for testing purpose only and using it for everyday usage is asking for problems. I ran with Nvidia driver as is with the Custom install and have no problems with them and I had 770 to 970 and now 1060 I had earlier Nvidia but don't recall those older cards. But I found Nvidia experience cause more problems then it helped after v2. Installing v2 on 1060 or higher will not work to turn off the ambience colors so don't install Nvidia Experience if that is what you also trying to do as well.

    Personally I won't use the upgrade, it wipes all my custom monitor settings and I have to start from scratch.

    Uninstalled Experience. Same problem. I get the splash screen, then it goes black and locks up. Also did not install the 3d program this time.

    Does device manager show any kind of error upon installing modded driver like a error 43 or something.

    No. I don't see any errors. It just boots to a black screen. Otherwise, if I run it as a standard vga adapter (no driver) it works, but of course has not advanced functionality.

    Might be signs of failing hardware. Check BIOS main page if it lists your dGPU then your issue might be driver related.

    Well, I reinstalled the proper driver (issue persists) and then checked bios. It says the same thing when I boot with the standard vga driver.

    Integrated graphics {Not Detected}
    Graphics Display 1 {Nvidia GFX}

    So, are you saying that indicates a driver problem? If so, that's exactly what I've been believing to be the problem. Used to work though, and still works for others, but why not my system?

    Is there another video card I can buy (newer and cooler than the OEM, but not the same as this one) that is known to be more dependable with or without a modded driver?
