I'm thinking of building an HTPC/Server system with the occasional light gaming. I was about to purchase a socketP motherboard at newegg by Jetway for $139 but am having second thoughts. My dilemma is that I already have a P8600 chip and 2gb of DDR3 sodimm so is it best to buy a socket P mobo and build the HTPC or sell the P8600 and 2gb ram and purchase an i3/i5 + mobo + ram?

    Option 1 -
add 139$ + shipping etc for a running P8600 server

    Option 2 -
Sell p8600+ram for $100 and have approx 250-260$ on a new chip, ram, mobo?

you do know you need a laptop motherboard... how are you going to build a HTPC without a laptop?IMO , your better off selling the P8600+RAM and most probably you'd get more than $100 and getting a new i3+i5+motherboard and RAM..

I have the Jetway motherboard you are referring to. It is great and I highly recommend it. The thing is absolutely tiny and silent unless you add in a huge double-wide graphics card like I did! If you have any questions about it, let me know.

I'm in the same position except with a T9400 cpu and 3gb of ram...

the idea of having a "gaming" computer that fits in a large shoebox is tempting...

^^ -atleast your cpu is faster.

I'm just going to wait until after christmas and see what the prices are. Debating on whether its worth getting the jetway mobo and building a P8600 server (would be super energy efficient at 25w) or selling the p8600 and 2gb ram picking up an entry level i5 and a basic mobo and ram.

I have an old 3870x2 card laying around, would be pimp to run that along with the p8600. I'd also have to be picking up a wireless usb key of some sort since the jetway socket P doesn't come with built-in wifi.

I'll be mainly using this pc to watch movies both downloaded movies and streaming shows for the girlfriend.

    I actually calculated these numbers:
    G.SKILL NQ Series DDR3 1333MHz (PC3-10666) 4GB (2x2GB) Dual Channel Kit
    $55.99

    Gigabyte GA-H55M-S2 Socket 1156 Intel H55 Chipset Dual-Channel DDR3 1666/1333/1066/800Mhz 7.1-Ch HD Audio GigaLAN 6x SATA 3Gb/s 12x USB 2.0 Micro ATX
    $79.99

    Intel Core i3 540 Dual-Core Socket LGA1156, 3.06Ghz, 4MB L3 Cache, 32nm (Retail Boxed) (BX80616I3540)
    $114.99

Total: $250.97 which means if I sold my p8600+2gb sodimm ddr3 for $140, this upgrade would only cost $110 + tax.

If i went with the Jetway Mobo, it would cost $139+10shipping+tax.

So it seems that the best value would be to pickup the i3 set up. Only draw back would be that it wouldnt be as green.

The Jetway motherboard has mini pci-e to use laptop wireless cards. I currently have the Intel 6300 installed.

yaa. Temping i agree. But I mean you can get a i3/i5 motherboard with onboard graphics for 89.99 by gigabyte. $129 is still steep compared to 89.99. I put my cpu and ram on ebay and hopefully it will sell for $100 or so.
