Can anyone recommend a good quality and fast 7200rpm PATA drive for a laptop? Small size is fine.

The 5400RPM Samsung HM160HC and WD3200BEVE (average read rate from HD Tune is ~50MB/s) are faster than the older 7200RPM drives available. Both of these drives can be found on Newegg.

    +1 for 160GB HM160HC, 250GB WD2500BEVE and 320GB WD3200BEVE, 160GB-per-platter PATA HDDS.

Other alternative route if you have an optical drive is to use a sata-to-pata optical bay caddy to house say a 2.5" 250GB-per-platter SATA HDD You'll see performance of 83-87MB/s across the PATA interface. The SATA HDDs being excellent bang-per-buck, and well matched to interface limits, outperforming the 160GB-per-platter PATA HDDs, giving up to 500GB capacities and transplantable into any future system you may acquire.

I would like to keep the thread on point, for the simple reason that my laptop (Panasonic Y5) does not have removable bays and the only location for the hard drive will only fit a 2.5" drive, almost to exact dimensions, and nothing else.

So staying on track: the objective of thread is to find a PATA drive, not an adapter or anything else.

So are these PATA drives - and are you saying they are faster than currenly available 7200 rpm PATA drives?

Most of my data will be stored on a NAS BTW, so I just need a small-to-medium size fast PATA drive for the laptop.

The HM160HC is faster than the Seagate 7200.1, Hitachi 7K60 series and 7K100 series.

The HM080GC, HM160HC and WD3200BEVE are the fastest drives available for the PATA interface. They all use platters with 160gb data density

Strange that no manufacturer has produced a 7200rpm PATA drive with 160GB (or 250GB) per platter. I would think there is plenty of demand.
