I'm thinking of getting a cooling pad for my laptop. it's 12.5", so no need of larger pad. Any recommendations for a good one? (Do they really make a difference, by the way?)

I have a Targus chill mat. I can't say I've noticed a difference in the core temp. My legs feel cooler though and it's nice to have the laptop elevated from my lap.

I think the fans could spin faster on the one I have, but there's no way to change that.

I have the Targus Chill Mat XC for my smaller laptop. Works well. You can pick up the V1 model for short money and it's exactly the same as the V2 version.

The most important job for any cooler is actually to keep the laptop off your lap so you don't block the system vents. In that way, they most all do the job.

I have a larger Targus Chill mat for my daily use 17" laptop which I monitor at times and it definitely makes a difference. Core temps are lower when it's in use. The dual layer provides lots of air to the fans. It also does provide a nice slight angle to the laptop which is better for my CP impaired wrists. Most of the smaller pads seem to be flat in design... look for a design that gets air to the fans.
