Hi All,
I have a 128GB Crucial M4 in my M18X (in sig below). I'm thinking of upgrading it as I presume the tech has improved a good bit since the M18X R1 came out.
I am considering:
Samsung 840 Pro 256GB
or
OCZ Vector 256GB
Any help would be appreciated...
Thanks.

Im getting a samsung evo 1TB 2 of them to put in RAID 0 i think there great and i hope they'll preform great in my alien but speed tests and everything says they do hit 500 mb/s

Thanks for the reply. I'll look into the samsung one then. Maybe not 2TB in raid 0, but something relatively quick

The two you listed were widely considered the top two SSDs in the 240-256GB size class for this gen. then the Sandisk Extreme II came out and joined them. Reliability is my concern with the OCZ. For an OS drive, I believe the Extreme II is the quickest drive based on it's "Steady State" Mixed red/write results, of the three.
Why the upgrade? You need more size? The SATA connector is SATA 3 on the M18X R1? If you aren't upgrading for size then it might be hard to justify the upgrade. You, realistically, may not notice a difference, depending on your workload. The tech has advanced but not that much. You have a solid 128GB drive.
RAID 0 will give you improved sequential speeds (large file transfers) but you'll take a slight hit in small file reads/writes (OS quickness). As an OS drive on an SSD, it isn't warranted in the vast majority of consumer workloads. Adding a second drive increases the likelihood of failure by two and the added cost of a second drive.gull_s_777, RCB and ajnindlo like this. -
The next step you could take in improving the system you have is to simply replace the HDD with an SSD. Other than that, you'd be better off banking that money towards a newer system later on. -
I am using M4 128GB in my XPS since 2011, and i won't upgrade to "new tech" SSDs for performance. I know i'll hardly notice a thing.
Only thing make me wanna upgrade will be if i want to have a bigger SSD. -
I think Bullrun said it well and covered all the key points.

Thanks all for the detailed replies, if I won't notice any boot speed increases or decreased load times then I think I'll leave it for now. I move the games I'm currently playing onto the SSD with steam mover so capacity is not an issue for me.
Recommend me a new SSD?
