Never had a problem with Sandisk nor PNY. Currently using the former in my phone and had the latter in my previous phone.

Commander Wolf can i haz broadwell?
Both of mine (about 2.5yrs old and 0.5yrs old) are SanDisk and no problems yet. Honestly the failure rates are probably comparable across most brands; some people are just luckier with some and unluckier with others. Just get the cheapest thing that meets your performance specification and remember to backup your data (which you should be doing anyway).

I've had success with the A-DATA memory cards, also SanDisk in various sizes & speeds. It's kind of a crapshoot ... pick one that has a reputable warranty (e.g. company has good customer service).

I recently bought two PNY Polaroid 64GB C10 UHS-1 cards for $35/each from Newegg last week. So far they're holding up great, but i registered for the 1 year warranty in case something goes wrong. Some companies offer Lifetime Warranties on their flash memory products like Team Group. That's worth registering for in case they fail.

Using Samsung Class 10 16GB in my cellphone, and it has worked great so far.

Is there a difference in reliability in these SD cards vs the built in memory of tablets/smartphones?
Let us consider a just bought tablet of 32 GB, vs another with only 16GB + 16GB microsd card
Is the failure probability different? -

Maybe I'm wrong and the actual silicon is the same (doubt it). Anyways, just take a look at that PNY 64GB card I mentioned above. It has 1 "one-egg" review and 13 "5-egg" reviews, the rest are mostly satisfied customers. This would be my current recommendation. What's different (to me) with the SD card is that has unallocated space of 16MB that I cannot get rid of and or control. My guess is that PNY set this aside for more consistent read/write performance?

Go for one with higher speed capability. See: Secure Digital - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia -
In my opinion Kingston or Samsung OEM 16Gb micro card SD are best.

Newegg is going to have one on sale for $10 starting at 3:00 Central this afternoon. It's from a brand called "Team" which doesn't sound encouraging but I've used the exact model they're putting on special for more than a year with no issues.

sandisk is not bad either, usually good price at costco

Right, and i made a mistake. You wanted a microSD card, not a regular SD card.
Recommendations for a 16GB microSD card?
