    Recommended 512 GB SSD for HP Elitebook 8760w?

    Hey guys...

    I've got an 8760w on the way, and it has a 128 GB SSD, plus one open bay.

    I'd like to get a 512 in there as well.

    Any recommendations for this? I've seen the Crucial 2.5" SSDs running for around $600.

    If there is a resource or recommendation it's greatly appreciated. If I can find something a bit cheaper too, great, but as far as I know all the 512's are in that range.

    I could be talked out of the SSD also based on one thing... If I have work files on a normal spinner, but the OS on the SSD as it is now, will the regular drive become a bottle neck?

    Basically I'm wondering where in the process do you want the SSD, to see optimal speed?

    SSD for OS and apps... data stick with a spinner grab a 1TB for 100$ or so...

    except for in very limited cases SSD's aren't much better as data drives than hd's

    depends how much IO this files will see...

    In terms of the 512GB SSDs you're just looking at the usual suspects - Crucial M4 and Samsung 830. I wouldn't recommend anything Sandforce-based, especially if it's handling your important work files.

    As far as an SSD as a data drive, you probably won't see that much improvement unless you're doing stuff that's very I/O heavy.

    512 GB main options (all prices are from Amazon):

    Plextor M3 512 GB - $699, 5 year warranty
    OCZ Vertex 4 512 GB - $639, 5 year warranty
    Crucial M4 512 GB - $599, 3 year warranty
    Samsung 830 512 GB - $712, 3 year warranty

    These are all pretty much the same speed, sometimes one drive will beat another in one test or another, but they could all be considered "the fastest" based on one or two benchmark tests. They'll all get your Windows boot time down below 10 seconds. The Crucial is a great deal for the price, but for not much more the OCZ gives you 2 more years of warranty. The Crucial has a much better reliability record, but the downside of that is that it's an older design. I see no reason to consider the Samsung: the Plextor gives you similar performance and a longer warranty for less money. It's more expensive than OCZ, but some people truly loathe OCZ and would rather buy Plextor.
