What's the recommended RAM for an i7 laptop? Is 4GB good enough?
    I'm talking about a Sager NP8690

Yep, it depends on what you are using it for.

But I don't think the average user would really need any more than 4GB DDR3 1333, unless you multitask like crazy (like Tilleroftheearth :D).

Plus, isn't the upgrade option from 4GB to 8GB something crazy like $300, in the NP8690? It is across the pond.

I'm using it for 3D modeling so I think more RAM is better but would 4 GB of RAM be slow on a i7 laptop? Would there be bottleneck?

Well some 3D modeling programs can use all the 8GB especially these professional CAD and engineering programs. You can verify that in the program requirements normally you find at their website. But the most important in these program is the GPU, they work better with Professional GPU like the Nvidia Quadro GPU family with special dedicated drivers if you are a Windows user.

4GB should be enough... if u need more u can upgrade urself later to 8GB for way cheaper than directly buying the laptop with 8GB...

Absolutely! This is one of the places manufacturers love to overcharge you.
Correct, the software manufacturer will tell you what works best.
Indeed they do. The only thing stopping me is...the money!! :(
