Which manufacturer are you buying from? Depending on the manufacturer, refurbished could mean anything from "perfect working condition but the user decided to get a refund" to "the power button works".

Having recently RMA'd my Ultrasharp 2209WA, and having seen 3 and subsequently refused 2 of their refurbs as a result of a long and drawn out RMA process, I would not recommend it. If you want the nitty gritty details, see:

Thanks. Looks like I will end up getting a U2412M (not refurb). Does Dell ask for proof of purchase for RMA?

Yes, they asked me for my invoice number, so make sure you keep your invoice.
