Samsung hard drives are pretty reliable. I have had no problems with them at all.

Never had a Samsung notebook I'm a Gateway fan! Sorry about your luck on the Hard Drive failure. Sure glad I never bought a Samsung notebook. You should go with Gateway :)

Who mentioned a hard drive failure.

I've had several Samsung HDDs. They tend to be cooler and quieter than average. However, my last one (the HM250JI) went back because Samsung were a bit slow to admit there was a firmware bug which hit the performance when used with some chipsets. This bug has now been fixed and that problem wouldn't put me off buying another Samsung HDD.

The problem was with the original firmware and I got one of the first batch to reach Europe. I suspect that the patch here fixes the problem. There's a thread here discussing the problem. It was started in July 07. The last post contains a couple of HDTune plots.

reliable, cool, quite and ... cheap (here in Germany). Once I "invested" to Western digital 2,5" IDE being bought by its better specs in terms of noise and heat,
but Samsung appeared to be better in real live!

Soon I am going to replace 1,8" Toshiba on my subnotebook with new 1,8" 120GB Samsung! It promises to be quiter/cooler/faster and cheaper than Toshiba 1,8-incher which still tops only at 100GB (afaik).

I had a 2.5" Samsung was installed one of my notebooks. Died in 6 months, and replaced with a Hitachi that never failed, was a hair louder, but faster.

My XPS 420 came with a 3.5" Samsung hard drive, which died in less than 2 months time. Replaced with a WD drive and it performs quieter and faster.

I have my own personal opinion about the reliability of Samsung products, as evidenced by my experiences with the only two Samsung products I've ever owned.

lol ironically Hitachi has a worse history than Samsung. Hitachi bough IBM's Deathstar division. Anyway it is mostly luck. Hard drives are bound to fail just a matter of time. Some people never have issues while others gets dead ones every once so often. As long as the warraty is good I wont worry about it. Just make sure to backup important stuff. Good practice anyway.

My notebook has had a Samsung hard drive for about 1 1/2 years and so far no problems. S.M.A.R.T. doesn't report any problems either.

Yep, drive images are your friend. This is why I'm on the fence about Raid 0 in hot little notebooks...I'm a bit paranoid as I forget to back up as often as I should.
