Anyone know how to get the HD out of an Acer TravelMate 8003LMI - it seems to be internal somewhere

Usually there is a screw or two to remove and slide the hard drive out. If you have the service manual, the procedure is usually covered there.

The question is funny to me, yeah, the HDD is generally internal ;)

Jokes aside, it is in a sled that should be removed from the sides in most cases, as zaz noted.

The HD is not in a slide in the side of the case, its not in a flap underneath the case - its buried internally somewhere.
If I had a service book I would know how to get at it and wouldn't need to ask here.

I'd try looking on Acer's site for the manual, but I can't even get it to load. They have, without a doubt, the worst site in teh world of all the notebook manufacturers. It doesn't even work in anything but IE.

I asked Acer tech support and this is what they said -

Hello, Thank you for contacting Acer.

Regarding your enquiry, Acer will not disclose this information, and removal of this part is done at your own risk.

    Regards
    Robert Elliott
    Acer Technical Support Team

It sems very unlikely then that this wil be covered in the manual

Well, that's a real shame. Send me your machine, I'll find it, LOL.

For a while, Acer's site wouldn't even open in FireFox. I'd just start taking panels off the bottom/side, but I wouldn't force anything. One of them has got to be the hard drive.

If you turn the laptop around (bottom up) you'll see a small cover on the opposite side of the battery picturing the same "HDD activity drum" that lights up on the front.
This would be a fair bet, methinks..

I'm sitting with a 8003LMi here right now. When you've removed the plastic HDD protection panel the three sound connectors and the shiny HDD bay is revealed. Now you need a way to slide it out.

I have opened quite a few laptop over the years, and I have yet to see one that won't open (including Mac iBooks and Powerbooks). Of course, this is breaking any warranties you may have.
