I don't really have a need for an optical drive and would like to remove it to increase air flow. Does removing the laptop's optical drive lower the operating temperature? If so, by how much?

I dont think it would really a difference if you arent using the drive anyway.

When you take out the optical Drive, its not just open inside to the motherboard and components... There is a metal casing around the Drive Bay. Therefor, i dont think it would really help the cooling or airflow.

No! And your increased airflow will also increase contamination. You know dust. That will make it harder to clean.

I truly feel your proposal is short sighted?

Removing the optical drive will remove weight from the laptop, but most likely it will not increase airflow. (Unless the caddy which holds the optical drive has holes in it for air to pass through- but you would need to install a fan in the optical drive bay to actually get air moving through the system.
