My old laptop's motherboard died and I want to recover files from its hard drive. What would I need to buy in order to access files from a SATA laptop drive?

I would buy a $10/$15 external enclosure for the drive. You can get fire wire, USB or eSATA connection depending on what is best for the computer you will be attaching to.

Or you could just put it in your desktop as a slave drive, and have it local and SATA connected.
