Hi,
I've recently taken apart my old HP dv6 laptop to salvage the parts. I've taken the 250gb SATA HDD out and put it in a nice case to use as an external HDD.
My problem is that I have 2 partitions: Local Disk(H223GB and HP_RECOVERY (I
9.52gb
How do I remove the (Iand combine it to (H
?
223 + 9.52 = 232.52gb? Where is the rest of the 17.48gb?
Any help is appreciated.

Hard drives from manufacturers are calculated by decimal format (base 10), while Windows calculates it by binary (base 2), thus the difference.
You realize that is your HP Recovery Partition, if you wipe it out, you will no longer be able to restore your drive to factory conditions, only by recovery discs or clean OS install. You should be able to delete the partition in Disk Management and increase volume. -
no you cant delete the partition in Disk management, this is a protected partition most likely.
to delete it, you need to open MSDOS box and type the following:
Diskpart
List disk
...
select disk 0 [or if your HDD is out and connected via USB or something then it would be disk 1 as disk 0 is the primary drive installed in the laptop]
...
list partition
...
select partition 1 [or whatever number the protected partition is, you find that out by its name]
...
delete partition override
-------------------
and you're now having unallocated space of the size of the partition.
note I put ... to where you'll see information displayed from Diskpart. -
Thanks a lot tsunade and miro

I know 7 will not touch some recovery partition, even through CMD...
XP doesn't have any issues formatting them. -

If you have access to a Linux disc, you can use GParted and blow it away.

The best partition utility I've used is Partition Master. It installs in Windows and changes partitions on the next boot.

Plus one for the above posted software link, have used it recently, and amazed at how simple and well it works!
