anyone with a notebook using the old pata mini-zif interface knows that space and performance do not come together.
1.8" 4200 rpm HDDs are painfully slow:

it is not a bug: 0.3 MB/s randowm 4k reads.

booted XP pro in 98 seconds.

the solution for my acer aspire one was a 1.3" SSD using a native pata controller, the renice ZE7-H. here is a size comparison with a samsung 1.8" SSD and a MS card:

it now boots windows 7 ultimate in 62 seconds and the space saved was used to install a touchscreen controller.

performance is amazing for a UDMA5 device:

this ssd was bought directly from renice, at $100, which for zif ssds is a bargain.
it is crazy to put a $100 ssd in a $250 netbook like my acer aspire one but the 3 USB ports, 2 card readers and portuguese keyboard made this old netbook irreplaceable to me, and my wife is fascinated by the behavior of the machine, now faster than the hp dm1z in internet browsing

Great little find that may work very well for old Acer netbook users as a replacement for the stock 16GB Mini Zif. But for anyone that has a computer with a 1.8" Zif HDD they would be better off with a full sized 1.8" Zif SSD because it is an 8 Channel SSD vs the mini zif that can only use 4 channels of the PATA controller therefor has far slower speeds.

For more info on 1.8" Zif drives check out this thread http://forum.notebookreview.com/sol...orage/531052-1-8-zif-pata-ssds-available.html
