I've had this laptop for 4 years now and about a month ago the screen went black. It still ran fine when connected to another monitor, and when I shined a flashlight onto the monitor I could still see the laptop display. Finally I researched the problem and ended up buying an inverter and a backlight for pretty cheap off ebay. I replaced the inverter first and saw no change, so I changed the backlight (it required some soldering but I think I did okay). Now, it still doesn't light up AND I can no longer see the picture when I shine a flashlight on the screen, although it still works on an external monitor.

Did I break my screen? Would a replacement be worth the cost? I have a feeling that this laptop just became a desktop....

    Thanks for the help,
    Brian

I guess I'll be buying a new laptop then....

Any suggestions on a good 13-14" under $700 and decent power?

It does sound like you ended up breaking your screen. I'd recheck the cable between the card and the screen just to be sure, make sure it's not pinched or loose, but if that's all good, then it's probably a broken screen. Replacement screens off eBay seem to run about $60-$130, so it's hard to say if a replacement would be worth it. It depends on how well the Dell still fits your needs. If you're looking to buy a replacement, you should probably put a post in the "What Notebook Should I Buy" forum instead.
