I broke my p7805u chassis and thus I have to disassemble the whole laptop. The problem is that I have to remove the CPU heatsink in order to remove the motherboard. Do I have to reapply thermal paste because I removed it?
I really don't want to because I gotta buy the alcohol and the paste itself and I've used quite a bit of money already. But I am afraid it might dry out or something while the heatsink is removed..

yep, otherwise you'd have air packets between the heatsink and processor

I wonder how much difference there is in temperature between a first application of a top quality paste on an brand new cpu and heatsink, compared to an replacement of old cheap thermal pad/paste with top quality paste, As you can never get the old cheap paste totally off, as it will be in the metal grain.
John.
Good video on how to clean off the old thermal paste/pad

Yeah, good point, I didn't even think about air packets being involved. Looks like I don't have a choice then.
As for the mixing of top quality paste wtih old paste, that's probably what I'm gonna do. I'm going to buy some Arctic Silver over whatever was already on there.
Replace Thermal Paste?
