The hard disk (TOSHIBA MK1652GSX(HDD2H03) 160GB) in my Toshiba laptop has stopped working. Having searched the internet for advice I have discovered that these HDD’s are not very reliable, I want to replace the disk with an alternative device. I am considering buying a Western Digital Scorpio Blue WD1600BEVT 160GB HDD, would this be a suitable alternative? Are there any other suitable alternatives? I intend to install Windows 7 on the new drive are there any issues associated with this decision? I presume that the bare disk fits into an adapter that interfaces with the laptop, how do I attach the drive to the adapter?

Any of the 2.5" HDDs with an SATA interface should work.

I suggest that you look for one of the recent 250GB HDDs which will provide a little performance boost compared to 160GB. You may want to look at the 250GB version of the Hitachi 5K500.B which gives very good performance (the 250GB is on one platter) and power efficiency.

How the HDD connects to the notebook varies between models. On some the HDD slots straight into the connector while others have a plug on a cable. All the SATA HDDs use a standard connector so it easy to do a swap. If you are not sure what to do then post a photo of the HDD in the bay.

Thanks for your response. I will have a look at the available 250GB HDD's. The connector is attached to the HDD via 4 screws, the connector fits directly into the HDD bay.
