    I own a Toshiba Satellite A100 TA9. Specs here.

I'm entirely convinced that my graphics card is conking out, resulting in display glitches or crashes when higher demand (ie. Fullscreen video) is placed on it. I have reinstalled the latest drivers and even reformatted to eliminate any possible software issues. I will be using a dualboot with XP MCE and Ubuntu 8.04.

The current card is NVIDIA® GeForce™ Go 7600 Graphics with 128MB DDR Video memory, PCI Express 16x. I would appreciate any suggestions for replacements. I am currently in the UK and probably will be purchasing here, though I might be able to consider options available from Canada. I will definitely consider an upgrade to 256 or more, though cost will be a determining factor. By no means is my system a gaming notebook, but I do appreciate performance with my daily tasks (multiple applications, videos, web design).

Thanks in advance for your help.

I looked around and did some searches, didn't come across it. I'll have a peek now, thanks.

    Alright read. Guh.

Next question from a hardware-stupid person. I'm pretty sure it's the video card memory that's degrading. Is it possible to just replace this? Yes, I realize soldering or something might be involved..

It'll cost you a fortune. Cheaper do buy another laptop.

I'm really not sure, my guess would be no.
I mean it's probably possible to do anything if you have the money and skills do to it... But I really doubt it would be cost effective to just replace the memory of the card and you'd probably be taking a pretty big risk in doing so.

Oh geez, being $30000 in debt from one year of schooling means a new computer isn't in the cards, despite my livelihood depending on it.

Looks like I'll put hardware acceleration to nil and see how long that lasts...

That looks a little too... out there for me to try.
I'm going to track down a Toshiba repair shop around here, see if they can give me a quote before resigning to a new computer.

    Sigh.

Whereabouts are you - i.e. UK, USA etc, 'coz there are quite a few laptop sites, which specialise in repairing laptops/selling spares.
I have a few UK laptop site URL's in my bookmarks/favourites, but there's no point in providing links to sites in the UK, if you're in the USA?

You could always just Google (i.e.) 'Toshiba Satellite Laptop Repairs' / 'Toshiba Satellite Laptop Spare Parts' etc of course, which would throw up hits to suitable sites, in whatever part of the world you're from ;)

Yeah, I'll do that. I'm in York UK currently, though the laptop is a Canadian model, as I'm from Toronto.

    Woo hoo, complications.
