Can anybody help - I came across my old Sony Vaio VGNFS215B laptop that I need to replace the hard drive on. Can anyone tell me what spec of hard drive I need to buy?

I have tried searching on the Sony sites but cannot find the specific technical specs of the hard drive.

    Thanks.

Your notebook has the ICH6-M Southbridge, which does have SATA-150 ports. I am not sure if Sony used the IDE channel or the SATA.
Easier way, download HD Tune, and upload a screenshot of the INFO page....

No the easier and more precise way is to open the HDD compartment and check the HDD. :D

I personally would find running HD Tune easier than opening up my laptop.

But what would be even easier is go to your device manager or BIOS and look at the type of hard drive and post that info here.

Hi I have found this forum (the first one I have ever posted in so please forgive any breaches of protocol) because i have exactly the same computer and would like to put in a bigger hard drive. As suggested i have gone into device properties and then done some googling, but I cant find an answer as to what i should buy; hence i am bothering you good people. The drive is Hitachi TravelStar 4K80 60GB 4200RPM 2.5 Inch 9.5MM ATA-100 HDD. Can you help please? best wishes.

Yes, any reason why this would be a bad idea?

Your notebook has an ATA controller. I am sure the SATA host controller on the ICH6-M southbridge supports 48-bit address, don't know about the IDE.

You can try out the HM160C above, but keep your OS patched to the latest Service Pack.

Thank you both very much for your help - it certainly looks a very good upgrade. I don't quite understand Andy's point about trying it out though, I doubt if any supplier would let me send it back, so to be sure it will work what more information about the computer should I find out?

It should work, and you'll see the full 160GB HDD space, but to be on the safe side, buy from a seller who accepts refunds/replacements....
