I'm looking for a replacement for my Panasonic (UJDA770) CD-RW/DVD-ROM Combo Drive.. I'm looking for another type of CD-RW/DVD-ROM to replace this one with. It's for my MV8800 which isn't a notebook, but because this Panasonic drive is usually used in notebooks from what I understand I thought this would be the best place to ask this. I'm just looking for somethin reliable that doesn't break down.. nothin too pricey.. same deminsions.. same specs just more reliable! Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thx for the thread I am a little confused though! What I got from that is that I would need to know if the drive hsa to be master or slave.. and the only way to tell would be to know what kind of drive the panasonic is.. Is there a way I can find drives that are like the panasonic?

The majority of optical drives are masters. Some have different firmware options to change them between master and slave.

If you have a notebook with an optical drive with the same size and connector then it's time to start swapping the hardware. You can figure out in Device Manager how the optical drive is configured. It's usually the device with current transfer speed of UDMA33.

The thing is its not for a notebook.. its for a production machine so theres no device manager or anythign like that.. I just need to swap the drive for one that has the same specs but I'm looking for another company since this drive seems to fail in alot of these machines.. just looking for the same options but a diff company

I'm at GMT+4.5 where the internet connection is very fragile.

What I suggested is that you take the burner out of that machine and stick it into a notebook so you can check the properties.

I share your reservations about that brand of burners which are fussier than average about their food.

If you can find a link listing the specs for the UJDA-770 then I might be able to offer further advice.

OK. That looks to be a standard 1/2" thick slimline notebook burner with PATA interface. Therefore, the only possible issue is whether it is set to be master or slave and you will have to find that out by putting the existing burner into a notebook.

If you are prepared to take a chance on the master / slave issue then work through this list at Newegg and check out the products that are slim / 12.7mm / 1/2" thick and have a PATA or ATAPI (note SATA) interface.
