I'd like to replace my adata xm11 128 GB msata SSD on my asus ux31a touch with a new 480 GB ssd.

Do you guys know if that's even possible on this laptop and if so, what 480 GB ssd can I buy?

    Thanks.

It should be possible. Have you looked at mSATA drives on newegg or amazon? It shouldn't be that hard to find one.

New 256GB HDD SSD mSATA Hard Disk Module for Asus Zenbook UX21 UX31 Taichi 21 | eBay

I looked. But the ux31a touch has a weird msata drive and the maximum size I can find is 256 GB like the link above.

That's why I started another post about my Samsung ativ book 7 which I know can be upgraded - but she'd rather keep her own laptop if she could.

$400 for an unknown 256GB SSD from ebay - nah; time for a new notebook (if the capacity is really too little).

Use the notebook as-is; or sell it as-is and get a system with the capacity that is currently needed is my best advice.

Note to self: don't buy any future systems with proprietary (main) components if you think the usage requirements will change (substantially) during the course of it's ownership.

I bought a few SanDisk Extreme II's 480GB SSD's for $299 over the holidays - so from my perspective you would be overpaying for this SSD by more than 2.5 times per GB. And, the performance is not even known or guaranteed (by anyone).

Do the right thing: 'upgrades' are only when the proper opportunity presents itself. This is not such a time.

    Good luck.

The UX31A uses a proprietary SSD (looks a bit like NGFF, but with different contact points), and the highest capacity available is 256GB. And for that, you're going to need to look on eBay or other second-hand places, as even Asus does not sell the SSDs for these systems separately.

Just replaced my ADATA XM11 256GB with a Crucial M500 480GB mounted on an adapter from M-data, and so far it is working just fine.

Does the cover still fit and what all parts did you buy and where. My ux31a has been dead for almost a year cause I was too cheap to buy a used SSD off ebay for $400.

    Hi dfrazee.
See photo, crucial M500 480GB SSD mounted on the adapter on the motherboard.
    Cover still fits.
Adapter name: Adapter NGFF M.2 HDD to XM11
If your original SSD is different from ADATA XM11, you need a different adapter.

I have just finished repairing my UX31A laptop after the original 128GB SSD failed.

The UX31 uses a non standard connector for the SSD. You can purchase an adapter to a standard M.2 SATA SSD from eBay for $20. The product is manufactured by SINTECH.

    SINTECH - UX31 M.2 SSD Adapter.JPG

I installed a Crucial M550 512GB SATA M.2 Type 2280 Internal Solid State Drive ( CT512M550SSD4) into the adapter. Most M.2 drives are compatible with the Sintech adapter if you prefer to use a different manufacture or need a different drive capacity. Be sure to purchase a SATA compatible SSD. The PCIe interface is not compatible. I was worried that the adapter SSD retaining screw would eventually fall out so I used cable ties to retain the SSD instead.

I reinstalled Windows7 64-bit onto the SSD by creating a USB boot drive. On my first few attempts to run the install I ran into a problem where windows failed to find the drivers. It turns out this a windows install bug. The solution is to unplug and move the usb install drive to a different usb port after windows boots into the first boot screen. After that the install should proceed normally. I didn't have any of the Asus Windows7 drivers available during the install so I used a different laptop to download and copy all the various drivers onto a usb stick from ASUS.com ASUS Service | North America

Most of the drivers are required. To be safe, I installed one driver at a time and rebooted. If you miss installing any you may find that some features of your laptop do not work.

Thanks for the info darylpbishop. Thinking of doing the same; seeing as how my SSD has died as well a few months prior. Can you post a link of where you purchased everything.

Also, on a side note, anyone here know where to pick up a couple extra cover screws? A few of mine loosened on the back and have disappeared.
