Hi there, I'm looking for some expert advice:

The LCD panel on my aging notebook (LG S1 Express Dual) has packed up. Now I recently upgraded the HDD to an SSD and put in more RAM, so the machine is running extremely well now and I don't need and can't afford a replacement machine.

I would like to upgrade from a 1280x800 WXGA panel to a 1680x1050 WSXGA+ panel, and was wondering how possible it would be - I have done a LOT of research and peoples mileage seems to vary greatly in this regard. The S1 did ship with WSXGA+ panels.

I posted in the LG forum too, and that thread contains all the technical information about inverters, ribbon cables, GPU and BIOS version... I'd like to see if someone with some experience can read it and give me some advice!

Thank you very much for any help!

The resolution is not important. If the connectors match it should work just fine.

If the higher resolution screen was an option for your notebook then there should be no compatibility issues.
This is assuming that it was an option with your specific motherboard.
If my memory serves me correctly, a dual line lvds driver is required for resolutions higher than 1440x900.

    Thanks for the feedback guys...

The higher resolution screens were an option for the S1's that came out after mine (with core 2 duos as opposed to core duos) - as far as I can tell the components didn't change at all other than the processors, however is there any way I can tell definitively if I have a dual line lvds driver?

@Ramgen - the screen connectors are identical (30 pin), however I was wondering if the number of wires in the ribbon cable have any impact on the supported resolution?

Yes, you will need all of the wires.

How many wires would that be exactly? For a 30 pin connector? Thanks

This is my connector + the wires - I'm assuming that's not all of them :( Also the two on the left are cut off a few inches down... So I guess I will have to go with WXGA...

With no alternative part listed in the service manual (despite WSXGA+ panels being listed in there) I guess there is no way of getting a replacement cable that will support the WSXGA+ resolution? Also those wires seem a little too small for me to DIY a solution either! If that's even possible?

Anyone want to help me out with a final verdict here?

Unfortunately impossible to see the motherboard end of this cable, I have removed the whole thing once when I was testing to check the cable and reseat it, and the other end is wrapped in a gray material covering so can't actually see the wires...

Also I've done some looking now on ebay and even though there are some 15.4" WSXGA+ broken laptops with ok screens, none of them offer shipping outside the US :(

    thanks for the help though!
