    Good day all.

Im new here, and recently got an ancient dell precision from my uncle, he was going to throw it out but gave it to me instead to experiment with.

The m6500 has a failing quadro fx 2800m. A friend of mine has a clevo gtx 280m. Can this Clevo GTX 280 replace the quadro?

No, m6500 use propriety graphics card, it's not MXM design like Clevo. As far I know there ware only 4 cards available: Quadros Fx2800m, fx3800m and 5000m and one ATI Fire Pro M7820. Since 2800m and 3800m are basically cousins of 9800m core, they share that same defect, causing card to fail. The 5000m is the fastest one cos it's basically Fermi based gtx480m, but it's expensive as hell. Fire Pro M7820 in terms of performance should be right next to 5000m as it's that same core as 5870m. If You considering replacing 2800m then Fire Pro M7820 is IMO the best option and it can be found quite cheap asswell.

Yeah, was reading about that... It's seems Dell only started using MXM cards from the M6600...

no, that is not correct. a core architecture itself is not something that can be physically defective in that way. the defects were associated with the solder and under fill of the A revision g92 and other nvidia BGA chips of that time period. the 2800m and 3800m, like the gtx 280m, 285m, 160m ETC and everything later than the the geforce 9000m/quadro FX *700m are all B revision g92 BGAs or later which do not have the defect and are also a cooler, more efficient 55nm die shrink from the 65nm A revision.

otherwise, yes you're correct that the m6500 is not MXM
