I'm trying to keep this laptop alive. You'll see many threads by me about trying to refurb this old machine. It's beginning to show its age. It's a 4 year old Gateway m305. The fan is noisy as hell. I'm looking to replace it with something silent. Does anyone know any specifics about this machine, or whereabouts I might find a silent fan to replace this one? (websites, stores, etc...)
I'm also wondering which fans will work in it, since I know fans are pretty vendor specific.

You cannot change the fans in your laptop, the fans are custom designed to work in that notebook only. The only way you can replace the fans are with the same ones.
I recommend cleaning your fans out with a compressed air can. This should help keep the fans clean and quieter.
Here is a link to the fan and heatsink:

This is the model info on the fan in your laptop:
Sunon fan number 054509BX-8, DC 5v 1.7w, 3-wires
Unfortunately you can only replace the laptop fans with the same ones because you are not going to be able to find a different fan which fits in your laptop.

I've already cleaned it out as much as I can. I even oiled the fan, as advised by my tech friend. It's still noisy. The dust and hair inside the heatsink/fan isnt the problem. It's the fan itself. I'm not going to buy another fan, I guess I'll just have to junk the machine. I won't swap out a crappy fan for another crappy fan.

If you are going to junk it, you may as well part it out, (sell the individual parts)
what are the specs, maybe Ill by some of the parts from you.

Hmm. Can't get much for the machine as a whole, I know that much. The battery itself isn't even worth shipping expenses, as it lasts 2 minutes (if you're lucky).
It's a 2.2 Ghz Intel Celeraon (P4 family). Has a 256MB stick and a 512MB stick (768MB total). Hard drive is only a year old, holds 40GB. The original had died, and I was still covered by the gateway warranty because I bought the extended warranty,so they shipped out a brand new HD.
I think the only salvageable parts would be the processor, RAM, belkin pcmcia wifi card, LCD screen, DVD/CD-RW drive, and Hard drive. If I parted these out on the forums here, about how much could I get for each? If I could get as much keeping it as a whole, I'd prefer selling it that way. It's still a great machine, the only issue I have with it is the noisy fan and the dead battery, and I need something more portable for school and has a larger battery capacity. -
You could probably get $150-$200 if you sold it here
If you sold the parts: (these are my opinionated estimates, you may get more or less for each component)
$50-75 for the screen
$10 for 256mb card
$20 for 512mb card
$30 for harddrive
$20 for Celeron 2.2
$20 for optical drive
$15-20 for pcmcia wifi card.
