Is it normal for a laptop drive to rip at only 2x? A 3.9gb dvd is looking to take 20mins! its starts at 1.7x and very slowly creeps up. ultra dma 2 is enable.
XP fully up to date.
Drive: new NEC AD-5540A
I6400
2ghz duo
2gb
5400rpm
I have now noticed the max rip speed to be 8x which is crap, but i cant get nowhere near it.
thanks![]()

20 minutes to rip a DVD doesn't sound too bad to me. Which software are you using? The best way to make comparisons is for other people to use the same software with other ODDs.
I know that for ripping CDs, the Teac DV-W28EA is about 50% faster than the Toshiba-Samsung TS-L632M (which is newer), so ripping performance must vary with brand and design.

Does it rip data DVDs any quicker? Some drives have a 'feature' known as Rip-Lock that limits reading speed if the source is a commercial DVD. If that's the case, you might find modded firmware that gets around that.
PS, you can check transfer speed with Nero CD-DVD Speed, available free. -
Notebook Optical Drives are much slower in comparison to their desktop counterparts. One obvious reason is their size and build, as the RPMs may head to a dangerous state(and temperature) in such a small drive.
You may want to invest in a firewire external Optical Drive.
