No clue, they have no reason to lie, but you never know until Intel releases a statement.

Suddenly those cheap 8-9" ultra-portables that will be flooding the market starting in June look quite tempting. They might just tie you over for the upcoming school year. You might actually prefer them because they are cheaper, smaller, lighter. If you need the CPU, GPU power, put a desktop in your dorm room. This combo might be a perfect solution for school. Cheap, not easy to steal, plenty of power, more hard rive space, easy to upgrade, large LCD screen space, etc. All for the same price of a new Centrino 2 laptop.

So far we have these low cost ultra-portables to choose from:
    Asus EEE
    HP mini note 2133
    VIA Openbook ( http://laptoping.com/via-openbook.html)

I hope so, then I will have no excuse to not buy a laptop now.

I think that carth is right; agonizing over not having the latest technology is pointless if the hardware you have meets your needs. So many people miss this point and end up waiting for new CPUs to come out; but new ones come out prob every month.

Well said. I wanted to postpone my decision to buy a laptop till this thing came out. Then I looked at what I needed and Penryn does its job. Some people still use Dothan and they are happy. You cannot have the latest tech no matter how hard you try.

    Hello,

There is merit to the flip-side however. What's wrong about being aware of what is coming down the pipe, and trying to make the right purchasing decision at the right time taking into consideration not only your needs but ALSO market trends? When I go car shopping, I don't just simply go and buy whatever "meets my needs today" on a whim. I take a look at what models are coming out, what discounts are applied to current models, what my finances will be over the coming year and many other factors. All this because the car isn't just a purchase, it's an investment.

Sure, if my laptop blows up today and I need a new one tomorrow morning, then no point in agonizing over what laptop is available in August. In that situation I'm not making an investment, I'm making a panic purchase to fulfill an immediate need. But I think many, if not the majority of us, don't buy laptops as panic purchases, but instead plan them out and purchase them thoughtfully as an investment. For those of us in that situation (which again I think is a LOT of people) it's perfectly okay to consider waiting for news of a coming platform change, model change, feature change, whatever. If I need a laptop in the next 3-4 months that will last me 3-4 years, then why shouldn't I want to know what Montevino looks like, and how it will affect my options?

I guess what I'm trying to say is that there are a lot of "just close your eyes and buy whatever meets your needs today" posts out there and while they all sound pretty and seemingly common-sensical, personally I find them anything but helpful for something as expensive as a laptop.

You can't have the latest tech, but you can have tech that will have a longer upgrade lifetime. With Montevina coming out, the old platform will die out, meaning if you want to upgrade in the future, you should probably wait for the new platform. I ran in to similar headaches when buying my desktop. I had to buy it (cause my last one died) when PCI-E was out on Intel mobos but not yet on AMD, yet AMD was ahead on the proc side. I ended up going with AMD and AGP, and of course now I'm boxed in to old hardware. (Of course I could buy a new mobo... but then a new proc, new GPU, new sound card, and new NIC would be necessary, in other words a new computer.)

Yeah in this case I agree with Swiego. I understand what Carth is saying for the general situation, small tweak here small tweak there. But Montevina is a bigger jump than Napa -> Santa Rosa, and there are alot of 'go-forward' technologies being supported by the platform. So for people who have no major immediate need, waiting a few extra weeks is OK and likely very beneficial.

Consider it similar to when intel was about to launch the new Core procs, if you were just weeks away and eschewed waiting for the new CPUs I bet you'd be kicking yourself for having rushed. Or the new graphics cards coming out, buying something today when there's something new and potentially game-changing right around the corner doesn't make much sense to me unless you need something right now.

Personally I'm waiting 'til the fall to potentially refresh my laptop because by then all the technologies I'm interested in will converge, Montevina, Displayport support, new GPUs, new SSDs, potentially new external interfaces (USB 3.0 PCIe external), potentially new displays and maybe Robson2 if it's worthy. Until then I would just upgrade what I have, and like sirmetman says, then the next one lets me upgrade it furter into the future as well. Buying at the end of the generation limits you somewhat.

Waiting many months when you really need a new machine now makes no sense, but if you know big changes are about to happend and we're talking about weeks and not months or quarters, then that makes more sense to me, especially since it also usually follows with price drops on the old gear too.

Now the OP says he 'needs' a laptop by July, if that's the case and he knows it's unlikely that there will be anything launched by the except for the relatively featureless versions like the Eurocomm, then I say, don't bother waiting if you have a good option now, or if nothing is a super deal, then wait as long as you can (where need takes over) and then buy the best you can when you can and never look back and never regret.

Waiting has its merits as do jumping on deals, just be sure to be aware of all the options current and upcoming, which the OP seems to be doing.

Unless that guy has massive hands, it looks a tad smaller than 12". If it will probably be 10" to compete with the Eee 1000.
