I have 2x Radeon HD3870 lying here that are also crossfire compatible so I was wondering if it's possible to run a laptop card into a desktop ...

Only if the motherboard has a compatible graphics interface. The overwhelming majority of desktops use a PCIe slot for the GPU and a mobile card will not fit in that, but there are some specialized small form factor desktops that came with laptop cards.

It's not gonna be worth the trouble. One Mobility Radeon HD 3870 is about as fast as a Radeon HD 4670 (desktop) or a Radeon HD 5730 (desktop). A Radeon HD 4850 (desktop), which can be had for $99, is gonna be faster than two Mobility Radeon HD 3870 in crossfire.

won't work most likely.. anyways , desktops cards are so cheap that even a $500 one is better than a $2000 mobile one...
