This question has always confused me: Could I run a 64 bit application on 32 bit Windows even if I have a 64 bit processor?
Anyone have a simple yes or no?

No u need 64bit windows, such as xp64 or the new vista coming out soon.
-
No 64bit apps wont work on x86 architecture.
-
Hmmm....looks like 64 bit Windows is the way to go.
-
tru dat

dont go with xp64, it has very little support...in fact its discontinued from microsoft. Drivers are hard to find, and it is extremely buggy. Im sure there are a few people in the world that would love to prove me wrong, but they are a really small percentage of people who purchased that OS. Wait for vista next year if you really want 64bit.

how can you tell if you have a 64 bit or 32 bit ?im vista capable so i assume i have 64bit
-
nah
ur 32 bit unless you have an AMD turion or a computer more than 3 weeks old.
But no worries, Vista will run in a crippled mode for all of us running 32 bit. But from what I can tell, there isn't much that's going to be lost. -
To pick nits, it's actually the x86-64 architecture. They won't run without an OS putting the processor into 64bit mode, though. All 64bit x86 processors run in both 32 and 64 bit modes. You can use a 32bit mode from a 64bit OS, but you can't go the other way.

well Ok let me put it this way...64bit apps wont work on standard x86 (x86-32) architecture. Happy??

Discontinued? Where'd you see that?
Anyway, you're exaggerating a bit. The OS itself isn't buggy, and drivers for common hardware aren't hard to find. You're screwed if you need drivers for some scanners, printers, webcames or such. But for essentials, such as motherboard, sound or graphics drivers, it's not really a problem.
That said, I still agree it's generally easier to stick with 32-bit Windows XP until Vista comes out.
